Street Sweeping
in Santee, California
Sweeping provides two primary benefits to the City. The more obvious benefit is the collection and removal of paper, leaves, and other visible debris that collect in the gutters. In addition to being unsightly, this debris can block the catch basins and other storm water facilities, causing localized flooding during heavy rains. An equally important, but less visible benefit is the removal of metal particles, and other hazardous waste products left by passing vehicles. Although they are virtually invisible, these particles can be extremely harmful to the fish and other wildlife, if they reach our creeks, our rivers, and eventually the ocean. Street sweeping is an effective method of removing both the large and microscopic pollutants that collect on City streets. The City of Santee has two different street sweeping programs:
Residential Street Sweeping
All residential areas are served by this program, which is on a twice a month schedule. Sweeping for the Residential Street program occurs between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm to minimize the impact of parked cars. The current contract vendor providing these services for the city is Cannon Pacific.
You are the “Key to the program’s success!" Please do not park your car on the street between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm on scheduled sweeping days. Do not place any lumber, bricks, basketball hoops or other foreign objects in the gutter or the street, and move any parked vehicle at least every 72 hours (per the vehicle code).
The City contracts solid waste removal with Waste Management, which has different routes and schedules than street sweeping and operates at different speeds. To accomplish their tasks street sweepers cover approximately 30 miles per day. Where as, trash collection vehicles must stop and pick-up containers covering approximately 10 miles per day. Occasionally, delays in trash pick up may result in the need to remove trash cans to allow the street sweeper to pass.
Arterial & Commercial Sweeping
The Arterial and Commercial program covers the main streets within the City (e.g. Mast Boulevard, Mission Gorge Road, Cuyamaca Street, Magnolia Avenue, Carlton Hills Boulevard). They are swept twice a month between 3:00 am and 7:00 am. The same contract vendor is providing these services for the City.
