City of Santee Partners with Impact Melanoma
Published Wednesday, July 10, 2024The City of Santee is pleased to be a Partner in Prevention with IMPACT Melanoma and Grossmont Healthcare to increase awareness of the dangers of exposure to the sun’s UV rays and to encourage the adoption of sun safe habits every day throughout the year.
While skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of all types, it is also preventable. Together the City of Santee and IMPACT Melanoma are focused on increasing awareness of the seriousness of skin cancer, especially melanoma which kills on average one person per hour in the United States. Prevention is essential and adopting healthy sun habits include regular use of sunscreen throughout the year and any time the UV index is 3 or higher. Prevention measures include wearing a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing and seeking shade, including portable shade to protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
The City of Santee has partnered with IMPACT Melanoma and Grossmont Healthcare including its anchor program, Practice Safe Skin, providing access to free sunscreen throughout City parks, including Big Rock Park, Mast Park, Shadow Hill Park, Town Center Community Park East, and Woodglen Vista Park. The City of Santee is the first city in California to implement a free sunscreen program. Look for these sunscreen dispensers and remember to be SunSafe every day of the year.
IMPACT Melanoma, Grossmont Healthcare, and the City of Santee will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at Big Rock Park for the installation of the sunscreen dispenser on June 19 at 10 a.m. All community members are welcome to attend to learn about skin cancer prevention, enjoy light refreshments and receive free sunscreen and giveaway items.
