NOTICE: New State Law - No Parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk
Published Friday, January 17, 2025Effective January 1, 2025, the state of California passed Assembly Bill 413 (the “Daylighting” Law), which requires a clear zone around crosswalks to reduce traffic accidents. Section of the Vehicle Code, CVC 22500(n), now prohibits the stopping, standing, or parking of a vehicle within 20 feet (from the approaching direction of travel side) of any marked or unmarked crosswalk anywhere in California. A crosswalk is defined as any intersecting roadways that meet at approximately right angles or are otherwise marked with a crosswalk. An unmarked crosswalk is the portion of a street that is in between sidewalks at an intersection. This law applies whether there is a painted crosswalk or not. This law also applies even when the curb line is not marked with red paint or no parking signs.
Starting January 1, 2025, all California law enforcement agencies will begin to issue warnings. After the first 60-day grace period (March 1, 2025), violation citations may be issued with a $77.50 fine.
