Household Hazardous Waste

Hazardous material is any liquid or solid substance that poses a threat to human health and safety or to the environment if improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of.
Household hazardous waste is potentially harmful waste used around the home. Santee residents should dispose of these materials at the Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection facility operated by Waste Management in El Cajon. The facility is open second and fourth Saturdays by appointment only. Residents must call Waste Management an appointment and directions. There is currently no charge for disposal. Loads cannot exceed 125 pounds or 15 gallons. No explosives, medical waste or business waste is accepted.

- Latex paints
- Rodent poison
- Weed killer

The following items/materials are accepted without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Waste Management's recycling center located at 925 O'Conner Street:
- Sharps (syringes and lancets properly packaged for disposal)
- Household batteries
- Fluorescent light tubes
- Mattresses and box springs
- Thermostats
- E-waste (TVs, computers, VCRs, stereos, microwaves) (Limit: 1-2 similar items per visit)
Prescription Drug Drop Off: The Santee Sheriff's Station at 8811 Cuyamaca Street has a bin in their lobby which residents can use to dispose of expired or no longer needed prescription medications.
