Hiking Safety Tips

Make sure you and your friends and family are prepared for the backcountry. Bring along items that are necessary to provide you comfort and keep you safe on the trails. These can include but are not limited to:

  • Plenty of drinking water for yourself and your dog
  • A map and compass or GPS device
  • Fully charged cellphone and battery bank (in case of emergency)
  • Appropriate clothing and footwear
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Snack food

Be alert: There are a wide range of potential hazards when exploring the back country. Rattlesnakes, poison oak and coyotes can all be found in the trails throughout Santee.

Practice trail courtesy: Be mindful and respectful of other trail users. You are responsible for your own safety at all times when on trails. Failure to use due care can lead to personal injury so please observe all trail regulations as they exist to protect you.

Be a good steward: Some of our trails, such as the Weston Trail and Walker Preserve Trail pass through or next to residential neighborhoods. Santee residents and property owners have generously provided access next to and through private property. Please be respectful of the residents privacy. Pick up your own trash, avoid excessive noise and remain on designated trails at all times.

Trail Etiquette
  • Know your place on the trails - Stay to right, pass on the left. Always yield to uphill traffic.
  • Don't be shy - When you encounter other trail users, offer a friendly "hello" or a simple head nod. If approaching someone from behind, announce yourself in a calm, friendly tone and indicate if you want to pass.
  • Be low tech - Keep your phone on you for photos and emergencies but don't let it be a distraction from the trails and beautiful scenery you're surrounded by.
  • Leave no trace - pack out what you pack in, including bridgeable items.
  • Don't feed the wildlife - Feeding wildlife has adverse effects on both the health of the animal and their habitat.
  • Leave what you find - The only souvenirs you should bring home with you are the pictures and memories you make on the trails.
  • Stay on designated trails - wandering off marked trails can be dangerous for both yourself and the natural habitat.
  • Be prepared - Always bring plenty of water and basic first aid supplies. On mountainous terrain its harder for first responders to reach you.
